About the credential

The Canadian Certified Physician Executive (CCPE) credential recognizes and advances physician leadership and excellence through a national, peer-generated, standards-based assessment process. It is based on the tenets of the LEADS in a Caring Environment capabilities framework.

Those who earn the credential have demonstrated that they have the leadership capabilities, knowledge and skills needed to succeed ― and to direct, influence and orchestrate change in Canada's complex health care system. There are two ways to achieve the credential: the Academic route and the Practice eligibility route.

Originally a joint venture between the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders (CSPL) and the Canadian Medical Association, and later with Joule Inc., the credential now belongs solely to CSPL.

CSPL is making changes to the Academic Route to recognize an expanded range of formal academic physician leadership development. CSPL has already added a number of programs to this year’s eligible list and will continue to add programs once they’ve been assessed against comparable metrics.

The most important component of either route is the quality of the applicant’s senior or executive leadership roles. The Peer Assessment Panel is looking for impact across the health care system at multiple levels.

The Canadian Society of Physician Leaders strongly recommends that all physician leaders applying for the CCPE credential become informed about and committed to advancing the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action.

Can you answer YES to most of these questions?

  • Do you have a minimum 5 to 10 years of leadership experience in health care?
  • Does your experience include progressive physician management/leadership education (including applicable ongoing CPD credits)?
  • Do you have a passion for leadership and see its value in health care transformation?
  • Do you influence change in your organization/institution at the systems level?
  • Do you have a cache of leadership accomplishments and experience at many levels, ie, local, provincial, national and systems levels?
